From 2009, we have committed ourselves to evolve Waglands into dogs’ ultimate experience. And we are still hatching plans to make it even better for you, your furry friend, your community, and the excellent team of people who do the hard yards bringing our aspirations to life every day of the year.
From the most humble beginnings, we’ve been on a mission to understand what our clients (two- and four-legged) need and are very proud today of everything we offer: the location, premises, facilities, team and the wholesome experience we share with our guests.
Ben & Arlene Adams combine a remarkable range of talents, investing their lives and loves into what we do each day – it is far more than ‘a a job’ to us.
Ben combines backgrounds in Engineering and Health Science with the desire to transform every environment at Waglands to work beautifully to bring out the best in your dog and the company (s)he delights in. And sharing experience with our community sees Ben guest lecturing at the Animal Care Course at Weltec and having all manner of interesting conversations with our lovely customers.
Arlene’s diverse backgrounds saw her managing her family Pet Shop and joining the family breeding and dog obedience competitions activities. Her early career took her into large projects in banking and finance, learning many skills that now form the backbone of the systems that win Waglands awards in Business Excellence. She took to Dog Grooming and became a New Zealand groom team member, competing and winning awards internationally and helping train Wellington’s grooming community towards their Master Groomer certification.
Both Arlene and Ben are actively involved in Waglands daily. But we also have learned to recognise that we need excellent help to wear the many hats that make your dog’s experience such a great success.
We think each team member is an absolute hero, working hard behind the scenes with passion, dedication and care. We always prefer to employ permanent, experienced people rather than casuals, looking to have our whole team getting to know returning guests better from day to day, or holiday to holiday. We specifically look for maturity, drive, dedication and collaboration in our team members.
We are a living wage (and above) employer because we think these people are the best in their league and deserve to be paid better than minimum wage – which is unfortunately too familiar in pet care.

We enter awards because we aspire to be the best at what we do, and the discipline of entering helps us keep thinking about constant improvement and pausing to recognise just how far we have come from such humble roots. We get fantastic feedback from judges who are well placed to share improvement insights. And also, because we are so proud of what we do – we want our team and our clients to see what hard work and passion can achieve. Here are just some of the awards we’ve received.
