Best people to take care of your most treasured furry friend and the Living Wage.

Ben Adams - Co-Owner - Waglands Dogs' Holiday Retreat

Of all the challenges we have tackled in creating Dog-Centred care at Waglands, creating a team who could consistently achieve this was by far the hardest to solve.

In 2009, it started with just me running in all directions, all-day every-day, in little more than survival mode.

We now have fourteen incredible people, and I marvel at their attentiveness, dedication, flexibility and genuine heart they bring with them. They are the absolute heroes of Waglands, whose efforts bring to life the Health, Happiness and Safety that our guests absolutely deserve.

Over the last two years, we have aspired to extending the Living Wage to our existing and new team members. Why?

  • We need the right people who can be thinking, active and proactive, all the time.
  • Every role these people perform is far from menial – from Annabelle the student mowing lawns, to our guest-caring team, to the welcome you enjoy on arrival
  • All of our team are genuine dog-lovers, and have (or aspire to have) their own dogs with them at work and at home. This makes rental accommodation incredibly hard to find, and we have lost great people who have had to move away from the region as they simply couldn’t afford to Live.
  • This talented team of people deserve to be nurtured for the effort they pour in, rain or shine, every day of the year.

So from those most humble beginnings ten years ago, we now have a team that can consistently do what we ask of them. They are the right people, and the best people, who make a real difference for our guests.

And we are delighted to have finally reached our target of giving them all, at the very least, a ‘Living Wage’.

Jane doing repairs on our driveway

Wonderful Help

A friend commented to me, "I don't know how you do it all". The next day I was standing next to our receptionist Jane, who had (willingly) agreed to help me get the driveway ready for the busy Summer holidays, despite having never done tar seal repairs in her life. And together we did a job of it we were both proud of. We are blessed with the most wonderful people in our team who will do whatever needs doing for our guests, our customers and our facilities. And it got me thinking... that is how I do it all. With some great help.

At Waglands we have a ‘dogcentric’ approach to our care. Which means we put every dog’s needs front and centre. Over the years we’ve learned what dogs really need and love, and also what their owners want too. Because you are both super important to us.
It boils down to three simple but important elements – you want your dog to stay happy, stay healthy and stay safe. So these three elements drive our dogcentric ‘Stay’ philosophy
